Introduction to Ya Boi Jacob Heath

Hey all,

My name is Jacob, but I go by many nicknames: Jake, Heath (my last name), DJ (it is a long story). You can also just call me Jacob, which is what most people do. My major is microbiology/pre-med. Microbiology is an odd major because the first microbiology course I took was not until second semester junior year, so I am glad I enjoyed it or else I would have wasted my first two years on a major I did not enjoy!

I eventual plan is to become a doctor. I still have a long ways to get there, but I am hopeful. People always ask me what specialty I am planning on, and I always hate giving them an answer. That part of my life is sooooo far away that I know my views and likes on different areas of medicine will change. Because most people expect an answer, I tell them sleep medicine because something about sleep and dreams interest me so much. I was the kid who had night terrors and sleep walked (I still do sometimes), so I think it would be a good fit for me.

My biggest hobby would be seeing movies. I am a big movie critic and have strong opinions on most movies that I see. Because of this, most people don't enjoy watching movies with me. This can be a good thing though because then I get to watch most movies in peace and quiet! Some of my favorite movies are Kill Bill (1&2), La La Land, and Breakfast Club. I know I am all over the place with the genre of movies I like.

An interesting thing about me is that I was able to study abroad in Australia! I talked briefly about this in my favorite places post, but there was so much more I wanted to say. It was the best thing I have ever done in my life so far. I studied at Monash University in Melbourne. Melbourne is a city with a population over the population of Oklahoma, so it was a big change. I was able to adapt quickly and learned all the new quirks that Australia had. And before you ask, spiders and snakes do not run rampant through the streets! I did see a few spiders and snakes, but I made sure to stay as far away as I could. I could go on forever about it, but that is a little more insight on my experience!

I hope this gave a quick introduction on who I am and some of my interests!

  1. Ohhhh, that intersection of sleep/dreams as something both medical and also something spiritual (for lack of a better word) is really fascinating, Jacob! There's something about mammal brains and dreams that is obviously really important: we've got to sleep... and we've also got to dream. I'm a heavy sleeper, deep dreamer, and I LOVE TO SLEEP. As you'll see from the materials I've collected to share with students in these classes, I worry a lot about people not getting enough sleep!
There's going to be a character coming up in the Ramayana you'll want to watch for: Kumbhakarna, the brother of the evil king of Lanka, Ravana. By mistake, Kumbhakarna got cursed with long long long periods of sleep. Waking him up is a big event! More about Kumbhakarna.
Also, there is a really cool legend, not in the traditional Ramayana like what you will read for class, but still a very popular legend in India, about how the wife of the hero Lakshmana SLEPT for the whole time he was gone so that he could stay AWAKE the whole time, and guard his brother Rama, the hero of the epic. Her name is Urmila; the legend is in Wikipedia: Urmila.
So.... maybe you will do a project about sleep and dreams for this class; I'm guessing that could be really cool. Anyway, keep it in mind. As a sleep-obsessed person, ha ha, I would be an eager reader!

  2. Jake I literally feel like I am meeting my lost twin I am currently a junior but when I was a freshman here at University of Oklahoma, I was majoring in microbiology Pre Med and wanted to be a doctor but I gave up in Sophomore year because I felt very isolated and I couldn't practice debate anymore and lots of labs and online homework. I also love watching movies and I am insomniac kinda closely related to hw you are.

  3. Jacob Heath what's up?! I had no clue we were in this class together until Kendall told me last night! Your post was fantastic. You should have posted some of your pictures from the Austrailia trip becau se they were all great. I have complete faith that you will make an amazing doctor some day! Also I have never watched the Breakfast Club so we should definitely watch it together sometime! See ya soon!

  4. What's up DJ Jacob Heath it's ya boi Kade! Haha, anyways, sleep and dreams are an incredibly interesting topic that I love reading/watching videos about. I hope you find your own niche in the research of it! I've actually never seen any of your three favorite movies, and normally stick to a steady diet of horror/thriller, but I guess I should give them a try!

I feel obligated to ask, are drop bears real?

  5. Hello Jacob,
Kill Bill V1 happens to be one of my favorite movies of all time! I didn't care for V2 as much because there wasn't enough action scenes. Also I think I might know you as well, I'm pretty sure you interviewed me and did a photo-shoot with me back in March. I didn't know you were a microbio major! Are you taking Patho right know with the professor with an English accent? Australia seems so fun and snakes aren't that bad I promise you if you don't bother them they won't bother you.

  6. That's really awesome that you're a Pre-Med major and want to be a doctor. I think sleep medicine is such a cool field and you don't often hear about people who want to do that with their Pre-Med degree. I really want to visit Australia so I think a study abroad there would be absolutely fascinating. Especially to get to study in Melbourne for a bit. I grew up in a place called Melbourne, Florida so I think going to see Melbourne, Australia would be really neat.

  7. Hi Jacob, so nice to meet you! Your introduction is very interesting, Sleep Medicine sounds really cool. I always have a hard time falling asleep, can't turn my brain off. That is so cool that you studied abroad in Australia! I almost studied abroad in Puebla but backed out (long story). As a person who hates both spiders and snakes, it was good to hear about Australia from the perspective of someone who's been there. I feel like sometimes when people think about Australia, they only focus on the negative (myself included, because I've never been). Your account of it makes me want to visit it someday and see it for myself.

  8. Hi Jacob. I really enjoyed reading your introduction blog. I think it is super interesting that you want to explore sleep medicine. I have also always wondered about the science behind dreams and I would find it really interesting to research further into. I also use to sleep walk and became quite good at it so it would be interesting to know why that happens.

  9. Hi, Jacob! Wow! It sounds like you lead a really interesting life! That is so awesome that you are pre-med. My cousin is hoping to become a doctor too, so I know how much work that all takes! Dreams are a very interesting study… it’s always fascinating how sometimes they can mean so much and sometimes they make no sense at all! Australia sounds like an amazing place! I’ve always wanted to go, but I’ve never had the chance to! What a neat opportunity!

  10. Hi Jacob! Love the field that you have chosen to take in your college career and really jealous that you have been able to do a study abroad as my major does not have those options. I really like that you are a movie critic as I myself really like to watch all movies and broaden my horizon on what is out there. I never really had any interest in the Kill Bill movies and probably would have never watched them if it wasn't for my current roommate that I live with. Now because of the roommate that I have, I have watched each Kill Bill for than two times each.

  11. HI JACOB!!!! You're such an interesting person to get to know and hang with! I wish I could just binge watch movies and just get paid to watch movies since that would be something you enjoy and getting paid for it would top it off. I have heard good things about La La Land but have never seen it but would definitely add it to my bucket list of movies to watch. I love to sleep as well. I can sleep for countless hours or days, etc. Additionally, I am a super heavy sleeper so nothing will wake me up. I am also in the relative medical field as I am wanting to major in Psychology Pre-Physicians Assistant and get the struggle of applying and getting through pre-requisites and trying to get through countless years of school.

  12. Hi Jacob! What a neat major! I'm glad you liked it too or else it would really suck trying to change your major. It's probably a good thing not to choose an area yet. I'm sure as you take more classes you'll figure out more what area will fit you. I agree with sleep being interesting though. I've always been interested in the psychology behind dreams. There's nothing wrong with being all over the place when it comes to movie genres. Just means you're well rounded. However I try to just take enjoyment from them for face value, and not stress to much, unless it is absolutely absurd. Australia would be such a wonderful place to get to visit and experience. A family member hosted a couple foreign exchange students, one being from Australia, and it was interesting to learn the differences. I still keep in touch with her. I've never watched some of the movies you had mentioned so i'll have to check them out.

  13. Hi Jacob! Sleep medicine sounds fascinating! Subsequently, recurring night terrors sounds horrifying. That had to suck. I hope they are fewer and farther between nowadays.

Confession: I have never seen Kill Bill. Either of them. I LOVE Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown but after that I just lost interest in Quentin Tarantino films. Oh, obviously I like Reservoir Dogs and True Romance. Maybe I'm just stuck in the '90s where it comes to Tarantino. The Breakfast Club however is one of my all time favorites! I can quote large portions of it.

  14. Hi Jacob! Your major sounds really interesting (though a far cry from mine -- English)! I think it's really cool that you want to become a doctor. That's not easy, so pursuing it shows that you're really committed to working hard! Also, I haven't seen any of the movies you list among your favorites. I'll definitely have to check them out!

  15. Hey Jacob! That's crazy how late microbio shows up in your degree sheet, even though it's literally your major. I felt similarly about mine, although it wasn't quite as extreme--my major is chemical engineering, and the first chemistry class I took at OU wasn't until second semester sophomore year, and it was pchem (ouch). Are you in the midst of applying to grad schools and such? Your experience in Australia sounds incredible, I'm glad you were able to do it!

  16. Hi Jacob! Sleep medicine sounds so cool! I’ve never really heard of it before now. I also have strong opinions on movies. I love critiquing them. It’s so fun. Breakfast Club was my favorite movie for a very long time. It has a special place in my heart! You have good taste! I haven’t seen either Kill Bill though. I’ll have to check them out someday. I hope that the rest of your semester goes well!

Week 12 Story: Seeking Refuge

A family of five stand in the long line at the Mexico/US border trying to get through. The mother asks the father if he has the correct paperwork needed to cross through. They believe there will be no issue as they are only seeking refuge in the states. With anticipation they wait. Longer and longer as the sun beats down overhead. Finally, after about six hours waiting, their turn comes. The border patrol asks for their paperwork. He stares at it for a long time as if trying to find something wrong with it. Eventually he hands it back to them and tells them to pass. The children start to get excited, but the mother tells them to calm down. They are not in the clear until the border is no longer in sight. As they begin the cross the bridge by foot, they are stopped by another patrol. He tells them to come over for a random inspection. The father does not know what they are going to inspect. All they have are the clothes on their backs. The officer searches each one of them, even t...
